Orchids are one of the most beloved plants, known for their elegance and beauty. But as temperatures drop, these delicate flowers require special care to thrive. Here's what you need to know about keeping your orchids healthy and vibrant in cold weather.
Why Cold Weather is a Challenge for Orchids
Orchids are tropical plants that thrive in warm environments. Unfortunately, they’re extremely sensitive to cold temperatures:
Exposure to air colder than 50°F for as little as 5 minutes can cause severe damage to the flowers and buds.
Cold-damaged flowers and buds cannot recover, leaving them wilted or lifeless.
Keep Orchids Warm
While orchids may require extra attention during colder months, their beauty and elegance make the effort worthwhile. By taking the right precautions, you can ensure your orchids stay healthy.
Ideal Temperature: Orchids prefer temperatures between 60°F and 75°F.
Avoid Cold Drafts: Place them away from windows, doors, or areas where cold air can seep in.
Bright but Indirect Light: Keep orchids near a window that provides bright, indirect sunlight but isn’t too cold.
Watering: Orchids need less water in colder months. Overwatering can harm the plant. Use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the roots.
