Roses are classic beauties and you’ll find them in many of our bouquets. They can have a really fantastic vase life with the right care! As with all stems, our Flower 101 tips and tricks apply to roses as well, but here’s some information from the pros.
-
Don’t panic about guard petals.
- When you first receive your roses, you may notice some slightly bruised, discolored, or ragged-looking petals on the outside of the bloom head.
- These are just guard petals, and they do exactly what the name suggests – they protect the flower as it develops.
- We think they enhance the natural beauty of the flowers (and truthfully, they increase vase life) but if you’d like to remove them it’s simple:
- Grab the petal at its base between your finger and thumb, as close to the stem as possible, and tug while gently rocking the petal back and forth. It should pop right off!
-
Necking roses can be saved!
- If one of your roses is suddenly bent over, you may be able to save it.
- Pop it out of the arrangement and trim the stem (remove at least ¼” from the bottom)
- Place the rose into its own vase or glass full of warm water away from the other flowers
- In about 12 hours, it may perk back up for you
- If one of your roses is suddenly bent over, you may be able to save it.
